The University of Illinois women's gymnastics team finished in a tie for first place at the Illinois State Meet Saturday night in DeKalb, Ill. Northern Illinois finished third with a score of 192.875 and Illinois State finished fourth with a score of 190.625.

"It was a good road score for our team," said head coach Lynn Brueckman whose team is vying for a regional spot based on an average score of two home, two away and two at-large scores. "I've never been involved in a tie score, but it was nice to start our championship season with a win."

The Fighting Illini won the top spot in four of the five events. Sophomore Phaedra Dixon (Chicago, Ill.) won two events. She won the vault with a career-best 9.750 and the uneven bars with a score of 9.875 while finishing second in the all-around with a score of 39.000. Sophomore Gina Weichmann (Clearwater, Fla.) won the all-around with a score of 39.075. Senior Kim Berres (Plymouth, Mich.) was the Illini's other first-place finisher scoring a 9.900 on beam.

Illinois has now won the State Meet three times in the championship's four years and will continue the championship portion of its schedule next weekend at the Big Ten Championships in East Lansing on Saturday, March 27.
