Illini Tie Team Record in Win
The University of Illinois women's gymnastics team topped Southeast Missouri and the University of Missouri Sunday afternoon in Cape Girardeau, Mo., and in the process tied a school record matching its team-high score of 194.3 points. The Illini edged region rivals Southeast Missouri (194.125) and Missouri (193.375) at the Houck Field House.
The Illini are competing for a Region 3 berth which qualifies its top six teams. Heading into today's competition, the Illini were ranked sixth in the region, one spot behind No. 5 Missouri and a spot in front of No. 7 Southeast Missouri.
"It was a great meet," head coach Lynn Brueckman said. "It was nice to compete against two teams in our region and with Missouri ranked ahead of us, and Southeast Missouri right behind us, it was a great win."
Illinois gymnasts established or tied five career bests in today's competition. Senior Becky Ashton (Chester Springs, Pa.) tied her career-best on bars with a 9.850 and set a new all-around mark with a score of 39.05. Sophomore Phaedra Dixon (Chicago, Ill.) also tied her career-best on bars with a 9.900 and scored a career best 9.875 on floor. Gina Wiechmann (So., Clearwater, Fla.) was the Illini's top finisher in the all-around with a score of 39.075. She also established a new career best on bars with a score of 9.90. The Illini's lone first-place finisher was Kim Berres (Plymouth, Mich.) who scored a 9.90 on the balance beam.
"The kids are real excited about this win," Brueckman said. "This should help our confidence heading into practice this week and into our dual with Minnesota next weekend."
The Fighting Illini (6-4 overall, 2-2 Big Ten) will be back in action on Saturday, February 27, hosting defending Big Ten champion Minnesota at 7 p.m. at Huff Hall.
