Illinois Tops Illinois State - 2/5/99

The University of Illinois women's gymnastics team beat Illinois State 192.575 to 186.175 Friday night at the Horton Field House in Normal, Ill. The Fighting Illini earned the top spot in each of the four events including the top two in the all-around.

"Scoring was tight on a couple events tonight, but the kids didn't let it get to them," Illini head coach Lynn Brueckman said. "We hit. We didn't have to count a fall tonight and improved on vault, the floor was excellent and we just made minor errors on bars and beam that we can work on in practice."

Illini sophomore Phaedra Dixon (Chicago, Ill./Whitney Young) again sparked the Illini's effort with wins on vault (9.70), bars (9.775) and the all-around (38.700). Her 9.70 vault is a new personal career best at Illinois. Senior Kim Berres (Plymouth, Mich.) took first-place honors on floor with a score of 9.75 while sophomore Gina Wiechamnn (Clearwater, Fla.) won the beam with a score of 9.825.

The Fighting Illini (4-3 overall, 2-1 Big Ten) will be back in action on Saturday, February 13, for a dual with No. 5 Penn State.
