Illinois Earns Dual Win Over MSU - 1/31/99
The University of Illinois women's gymnastics team beat Michigan State 193.225 to 191.375 Sunday afternoon at the Jenison Field House in East Lansing, Mich. The Fighting Illini used a strong team effort in each event to gain the victory.
"We received a much stronger team effort this week," Illini head coach Lynn Brueckman said. "We definitely picked it up on vault and bars. We can do a lot better, but this effort is something we can build on."
Illini sophomore Phaedra Dixon (Chicago, Ill./Whitney Young) paced the Illini's effort establishing a career best in the all-around with a score of 39.025 with marks of 9.625 on vault, 9.875 on bars, 9.725 on beam and 9.800 on floor. She finished second in both bars and floor. Senior Kim Berres (Plymouth, Mich.) was the Illini's top finisher in the other two events, finishing second on both the vault (9.750) and beam (9.850).
The Fighting Illini (3-3 overall, 2-1 Big Ten) will be back in action on Friday, February 5, traveling to Bloomington, Ill., for a dual with Illinois State.
