Illini Earn Two Dual Meet Victories at Huff - 1/23/99

The University of Illinois women's gymnastics team finished with two wins and one defeat in quad dual competition Saturday night at Huff Hall in Champaign. The Fighting Illini finished the event with a score of 190.775, falling to Illinois-Chicago with 192.650 while outscoring Iowa (189.675) and Illinois State (188.900).

Illini sophomore Gina Wiechmann (Clearwater, Fla./Countryside) continued her early season success winning the all-around with a score of 38.850, she followed by /teammate Phaedra Dixon (Chicago, Ill./Whitney Young) with a score of 38.350. Wiechmann earned top scores on uneven bars (9.850), balance beam (9.800) and floor excercise (9.850). Senior Kim Berres (Plymouth, Mich.) tied Wiechmann for top honors on beam and floor.

"We had a lot of individuals stand out tonight," Illinois Head Coach Lynn Brueckman said. "A few individuals did very well and I'm pleased with them but the team effort was just not there. We're going to go back into the gym and work on our consistency and make sure we're prepared for the next meet."

The Fighting Illini (2-3 overall, 1-1 Big Ten) will be back in action on January 31 traveling to East Lansing, Mich., for a Big Ten dual with Michigan State.
