    Illini Drop Dual Meets at Florida - 1/8/99

    The University of Illinois women's gymnastics team dropped a pair of dual meets Friday night in Gainesville, Fla. The Fighting Illini scored 188.750 points, falling to No. 7 Michigan with 193.300 and No. 2 Florida with 190.275.

    Illini sophomore Gina Wiechmann (Clearwater, Fla./Countryside) led the Illini while performing in her home state. Wiech Amann finished first on the beam scoring a 9.700. Sophomore Phaedra Dixon (Chicago, Ill./Whitney Young) was UI's top finisher in the all-around placing fifth with a score of 38.150. Dixon's top individual finish was third on bars with a score of 9.625.

    "This will probably be one of the toughest meets of our season," Illinois Head Coach Lynn Brueckman said. "It was a good test to see how we compare with two of the top teams in the nation."

    The Fighting Illini (0-2 overall, 0-1 Big Ten) will be back in action on January 23 when they open the home season against Iowa, Illinois-Chicago and Illinois State at Huff Hall starting at 7 p.m.
