Go behind the scenes of Illinois women's golf with "Chip Shots", the online golf journal. In the fourth edition of the season, junior Raquel Hopton discusses the Hawkeye Women's Invitational, their medieval themed hotel, and achieving goals.
Our team traveled this past weekend to Iowa City, Iowa to compete in the Hawkeye Invitational hosted by the University of Iowa. The weather was a bit chilly but we are used to practicing in inclement weather in Champaign, so it was definitely an advantage for us over some of the other teams. We got to stay in a hotel that was medieval themed, which kept all of us entertained for a couple days. We also ate at Iowa City Power Restaurant, which is a huge building that used to be a Power Plant. It was really nice and right on the water.
We accomplished a lot during this tournament. Our team achieved a second place finish which is our highest finish this season and one of our goals. We also accomplished our goal of having two individuals finish in the top 3. One of the highlights of the weekend was our freshman, Crystal Smith getting her first career hole-in-one on the 179 yard Par 3 number 8! Congrats to Crystal and also to Kaitlyn Wampler for holing out from 75 yards on the par 5 number 2. We all know that we could have played better and we have reflected on the tournament and know what we have to work on before we travel to Austin, Texas on Halloween.
Thanks for keeping up with our progress.
