Illini to Battle Big Ten foes at Diane Thomason Inv.

CHAMPAIGN, Ill.- The Illinois Women's Golf team looks to build upon their strong start to the fall season this weekend as they travel to Iowa City, Iowa to compete in the three-round Diane Thomason Invitational held at Finkbine Golf Course on Saturday and Sunday. So far, Illinois has finished third and second as a team in this season's first two tournaments respectively, resulting in their national ranking skyrocketing from 122 to 28.
Representing the Orange and Blue in the team lineup this weekend will be freshmen Stephanie Miller and Emily Joers, juniors Michelle Mayer and Sam Postillion and senior Ember Schuldt. In addition, redshirt-junior Jackie Calamaro and junior Erin Ahern will also be playing as individual competitors.
The Diane Thomason Invitation will feature a solid 12-team field including four other schools from the Big Ten. Thus, the tournament field includes Kansas, Kansas State, Central Florida, South Florida, Chattanooga, Augusta State and Middle Tennessee State, with the Big Ten being represented by Illinois, Iowa, Michigan, Ohio State and Wisconsin. Of the 12 teams, only Ohio State is ranked in the top 25, checking in at 18th.
So far this season, Illinois has used a combination of experience and youth to improve their scores on the course. Freshmen Emily Joers and Stephanie Miller have hit the ground running in college play, including top ten individual finishes for each golfer in the Minnesota Invitational. In addition, Miller and Joers have the second and fourth best stroke averages on the team, respectively.
The experience of Postillion and Schuldt has come in handy for Illinois earlier on as well. Schuldt has finished in the top ten in the first two tournaments this season, including third place honors at the Minnesota Invitational. Schuldt has the lowest stroke average on the team for this fall season, checking in at 73.67 strokes per round. Meanwhile, Postilion shot an even par at the Ptarmigan Classic to finish fifth and boasts the third best team average per round.
Finkbine is the University of Iowa's championship golf course, home to both the men's and women's teams. Finkbine has a USGA course rating of 74.1 and slope rating of 132. For a hole by hole tour, click here.
