Go behind the scenes of Illinois women's golf with "Chip Shots", the online golf journal. In the second edition of the new season, sophomore Kaitlyn Wampler discusses the first tournament in Denver and a birthday celebration.
Hi Illini fans! We recently competed in our first tournament of the season, The Ron Moore Invitational in Denver, Colo. What a wonderful experience for our team! This was our first tournament with assistant coach and former Illini golfer Stephanie Wagemann. She is a great addition to our team!
To begin we celebrated Samantha Sloan's 20th birthday! We got a huge ice cream cake which proved to be difficult for all seven of us to eat! The weather throughout the tournament was a bit cold and rainy, but we still enjoyed the competition and beautiful scenery. This tournament was a very motivating and positive start to our season. We accomplished one of our season goals which was to break 300 as a team! We left the tournament with confidence and encouragement to keep working hard. One of our main focuses for this season is goals. Without a direction we don't know where we are going or when we have gotten there. So, we are setting team goals for each tournament as well as individuals goals to help us break down what each individual will contribute to help us reach that team goal. We also managed to learn a little more about each other along the way! Coach Slone was a Michael Jackson fan in her younger years and even has some moves to prove it. We really enjoy playing catch with the football; however it's probably in all of our best interests to stick to golf!
Thanks so much for following our progress! We have a busy schedule ahead of us and we couldn't be more excited!
