EAST LANSING, Mich. - Frustrated by a challenging morning, Illinois women's golf sophomore Casey Burden responded with an even-par afternoon on Michigan State's Forest Akers West course.
Burden and her teammates shot an opening-round 319 - the same score as last weekend's first round at Notre Dame's Warren Golf Course - but whereas the Orange and Blue added four strokes to their first-round total at South Bend, they subtracted 19 strokes on this Saturday to conclude the day in ninth place.
"I think we responded pretty well after a rough morning. It's good to see where we stand," Burden said.
Rain on Friday dampened the practice round and left the greens wet for Saturday's initial round. Burden also had chest pains she believes were the result of dehydration.
"It was pretty frustrating. I've had times where I've shot 85-73 but I've never not felt well," the Lake Bluff, Ill. native said.
Hydrated, she met par in her afternoon round. Senior teammate Megan Godfrey missed par by one stroke after a morning-round 79.
"I think we could have all played a lot better today. I was hitting a lot of greens, my drives were fantastic, my irons were great but I couldn't putt," sophomore Seul Ki Park said.
Illinois ended the first day 25 strokes behind host Michigan State. The Spartans avoided 300 in both of their rounds, shooting 299 and 295. Northwestern's second-round 292 stood up as the day's best total.
Wildcat Jennifer Hong leads the tournament at two-over 146. Three golfers are tied at three-over. Indiana's Shannon Johnson (+4) is tied for sixth after two rounds. Johnson shared top honors last week when both Illinois and Indiana were at Notre Dame.
Saturday's second round Illini score surpassed last weekend's final-round 309 by nine strokes.
"They had all done good things in the morning. In the afternoon, they put it all together. They're looking forward to teeing it up tomorrow," Orange and Blue head coach Paula Smith said.
