Chip Shots with Raquel Hopton
Aug. 25, 2010
Go behind the scenes of Illinois women's golf with "Chip Shots", the online golf journal. In the first edition of the new season, senior Raquel Hopton talks about what all the players were up to over the summer and how much they are looking forward to the new season.
Hey Illini fans!
We are wrapping up our summer and heading full steam ahead into our fall season. The entire team is pumped up for what we are going to accomplish this year, but I am especially looking forward to my final year as a Fighting Illini golfer as the solo senior on the team! We are so excited to welcome our two freshmen, Ember Schuldt and Jacqueline Calamaro, to our team this year and can't wait to show them around Champaign! Our girls played a lot of golf this summer and claimed numerous victories. Off the golf course, however, we also had a fun summer.
Crystal Smith spent her summer in sunny Venice, Fla., catching up on her favorite shows and spending time at the beach. Maureen Liddy spent a couple days at the PGA Championship and got to witness some great golfers in action. She also spent time in Door County at her family's new cottage. Hailey Koschmann went hiking and camping in Utah as well as played some golf in New York. Samantha Sloan had a good time at the Brad Paisley concert where she ended up front and center next to the stage, was shown on the jumbotron and caught one of his guitar picks! Crystal wasn't the only one enjoying a little beach time, our resident "California Girl" Katie Dilger enjoyed time spent with friends at Zuma Beach where she got to hang out with some dolphins and seals. Kaitlyn Wampler was hard at work taking summer classes. Nora Lucas travelled all the way to Ireland to see where her family is from. I'm sure she will come back with a few interesting stories (told with an accent, of course).
I spent my summer a few feet away from Coach Renee Slone's office every day where I worked for the Summer Camps office. The office is in charge of the summer camps for all of our varsity sports. I worked with Brian Walsh and Zach Acton each day preparing for thousands of campers to descend upon campus and keep us busy!
Don't be fooled by our vacations and concerts, we have all been working extremely hard to prepare for this coming season. Our schedule is very competitive this fall, and we are all looking forward to accomplishing our goals. At our first team meeting, we will sit down and map out our mission statement and goals for the year. Setting challenging goals are imperative to the success of our team and is taken very seriously by all team members and the coaching staff. Make sure to follow our progress throughout the season and check back here for updates and tournament results.
