Champaign, Ill. - Illinois women's golf coach Paula Smith has announced that Nancy Ann Featherstone of Franklin, Ill. has joined the UI program. A standout multi-sport athlete at Franklin High School, Featherstone began fall semester classes today and is a freshman on the 2005-06 Illini roster.
Featherstone won 10 varsity letters at Franklin, four each in golf and basketball and one each in softball and track. Although she was captain of the basketball team and scored over 1,000 points in her career, the golf course was where she most excelled, qualifying for the IHSA State Championship all four years.
She has had success in a number of tournaments on the summer golf circuit, including first-place finishes at the All-Stars Junior Golf Tour (TPC Sawgrass), the Illinois District Optimist (Piper Glen Golf Club), and the Jacksonville City Tournament. She is a four-time National Optimist Qualifier and was a World Cup Qualifier, taking second place at the National World Cup (Magnolia Golf Course in Orlando).
A high honor roll student throughout her high school career, Featherstone also accumulated a number of academic awards including the President's Award for Academic Excellence, Who's Who Among American High School Students and National Honor Society, and was also chosen to the Jacksonville Journal Courier's All-Area Sports Academic Team.
Featherstone was most recently named the 2005 recipient of the Julia H. Dodds Junior Girls' Award, presented by the Illinois Women's Golf Association (IWGA). This award is given annually to a player who epitomizes the standards of character, scholarship, leadership, sportsmanship and love for the game of Golf.
"Nancy will be a great representative for the Illinois women's golf team, not only on the golf course but in the classroom as well." Illini coach Paula Smith said.
The Illinois women's golf team begins the 2005 fall season Sept. 10-11 at the Notre Dame Invitational.
