On Monday’s opening round, Sloan shot a 14-over par 86 at the par-72 6,560-yard Charlotte Country Club course. Tuesday will conclude the stroke play portion of the tournament, with the field of players cut to the lowest 64 scores. Starting Wednesday, August 11, golfers will play match-play to determine the U.S. Women’s Amateur champion. Here is Sloan’s second installment from Saturday, August seventh.
Hello again, fellow Illini!
I’m having the time of my life at the US Women’s Amateur Championship in Charlotte, NC. I landed Friday around 5 pm and headed to the course to go through registration and check things out. What an amazing venue! This year, the club is celebrating its 100th anniversary and recently went through some renovations in the clubhouse. The staff has been so helpful and polite, I feel like royalty! The USGA runs some of the best tournaments because they are on top of everything. The officials are so organized, they never skip a beat!
It is obvious that that Charlotte County Club grounds crew has worked hard to get the course in pristine condition. I played my first practice round today, and it is quite the test. It is a classic Donald Ross layout with wide fairways and active greens. As expected, the rough is thick and the greens are rolling fast but very fair. I have another practice round tomorrow so I can analyze the course a little more and get my game plan set, and after that, it’s game time! I tee off at 8:50 on Monday, and live scoring will be available at www.usga.org.
