Champaign, Ill. - The entire University of Illinois women's golf team continued its successful summer play last weekend (July 26-28) at the 13th Illinois Women's Open Championship hosted Mistwood Golf Club in Romeoville, Ill. Five Fighting Illini finished in the top-30, led by senior Seul Ki Park in fifth place.
Park fired rounds of 75-70-73 for a two-over par total of 218 to finish just three shots off the pace. Senior Casey Burden (72-76-75=223) and incoming freshman Raquel Hopton (79-69-75=223) both tied for 15th at seven over-par. Hopton's second round 69 equaled the third lowest score of the tournament.
Seniors Stephanie Mory (77-76-76=229) and Kristin Kallergis (74-76-82=232) finished tied for 23rd and 26th, respectively, while three other Illini, Nancy Featherstone (81-77=158), Kristine Cook (84-78=162) and Kelsey O'Neal (86-79=165), failed to make the 36-hole cut of 156 (+12).
In addition to the eight current Illini, 2006 UI alum Megan Godfrey turned in a stellar performance at the Open as well. Godfrey finished alone in third place with an even par score of 216 (71-76-69), just one shot off the winning total of 215 by Nicole Schachner and Jenna Pearson. Schachner took home the individual crown in a grueling 10-hole playoff.
The Illinois Women's Open is a 54-hole stroke play format. Entries were open to all professionals and amateurs who are residents of Illinois, Wisconsin, Iowa, Minnesota, Indiana, Kentucky, Missouri and Michigan and students currently enrolled in a college in those states. Players had to be 17 years-old as of July 26, 2007, although special exemptions were considered.
