Illini in Action: June 17-21

Champaign, Ill. – Several members of the Fighting Illini women’s golf team were in action this past week. Erin Ahern and Ember Schuldt qualified for the U.S. Women’s Public Links Championship, in which Schuldt posted a top-16 finish. Samantha Postillion qualified for match play at the Women’s Western Golf Association National Amateur Championship in Dayton, Ohio, while incoming freshman Stephanie Miller posted a top-10 finish at the Bubba Conlee National Tournament outside of Memphis.
Ahern and Schuldt were two of 156 women to participate in the 37th U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links Championship which began on June 17 with two rounds of stroke play. Ahern tied for 110th with a 79-80=159 (+15), while Schuldt posted a 74-75=149 (+5) to tie for 34th an qualify for match play.
Schuldt was seeded 40th in the 64-player match play bracket, and drew #25 Lucy Li in the first round. The rising senior won the first hole and maintained a lead throughout the whole round, going as high as 5 up before completing the victory 3 & 2. The Sterling, Ill., native next took on Argentinian #57 Mercedes Huarte, who upset #8 Ashley Holder in the first round, and held on to win, 2 &1. Schuldt took an early lead over Cindy Ha in the Round of 16, sitting at 4 up through eight holes. She maintained her lead for the majority of the round, sitting at 3 up with four holes to play. Ha then pulled out a miraculous comeback, winning holes 15-17 to tie the score and taking down Schuldt 5-4 on the 19th to end Schuldt’s tournament run just before the quarterfinals.
Incoming freshman Stephanie Miller participated in the 33rd Annual Bubba Conlee National Junior Golf Tournament at Quail Ridge Golf Club in Bartlett, Tenn. She turned in three solid rounds to finish in a tie for ninth with a 73-73-75=221 (+5). Miller looked to move up the standings in the final round, shooting -1 through the first 12 holes, but bogeyed four of the final six to finish with a 75 and land in ninth place.
Rising junior Postillion teed off in Dayton, Ohio on June 17 at the 113th WWGA National Amateur Championship. In a similar format as the Public Links Championship, Postillion played two rounds of stroke play to determine qualifiers and seedings for match play. Postillion shot a 77-75=152 (+8) to place 42nd and advance to match play. The Burr Ridge, Ill., native took on #15 Jessica Porvasnik in the first round, and fell 3 & 1.
