Four Illini in Championship Flight at Women's Western Am
June 13, 2007 2007 WWGA National Amatuer Championship Website URBANA, Ill. - Qualifying for the Women's Western Golf Association's (WWGA) 107th National Amateur Championship wrapped up Tuesday at Stone Creek Golf Course in Urbana, Ill., and the brackets are set for this week's match play tournament. Four of the eight University of Illinois players in the field are in the Championship flight, led by senior-to-be Stephanie Mory, who had the fifth lowest 36-hole qualifying score with a two-under par total of 142. Mory fired rounds of 72 and 70 on the Fighting Illini's home course to finish just two shots behind medalist Lauren Mielbrect, a member of the University of Virginia golf team. Senior Kristine Cook (75-75=150), senior Seul Ki Park (76-75=151) and junior Nancy Featherstone (76-79-155) are also representing the Illini in the 64-player Championship Flight. Four other members of Renee Slone's squad are in the field as well. Senior Casey Burden will compete in the 16-player First Flight after shooting rounds of 78 and 83 for a total of 161. Senior Kristin Kallergis (80-85=165) will compete in the Second flight, while junior Kelsey O'Neal (86-83=169) and incoming freshman Raquel Hopton (87-82=169) are in the Third Flight. Single elimination match play action began Wednesday morning (June 13) at Stone Creek and will be played each day through Saturday, June 16. The 36-hole Championship Final will take place on Saturday, while all other flight finals will be on Friday, June 15th. The public is invited to attend each day free of charge. The tournament features 120 players from 20 states, including the entire 2007-08 University of Illinois women's golf roster, plus players from Canada and the Philippines gunning for the prestigious title.
