Go behind the scenes of Illinois women's golf with "Chip Shots", the online golf journal. In the 14th and final edition of the season, freshman Nora Lucas takes a break from studying for finals to look back at the women's golf team's 2008-09 season.
As I begin to camp out at Irwin for finals, pack up my room, and finalize my tournament schedule for this summer, I wanted to look at my freshman year and my team's season of 2008-2009. It seems like almost yesterday that we were all moving in and getting to know each other. Now we are like sisters to one another. Our season as a whole was not what we expected from ourselves but I think that it was something we had to go through being such a young team. Having only one senior, one sophomore, and seven freshmen makes for an interesting combination. Coach has also told us that you learn a lot more from your mistakes than you do from your victories. I think that all of us began to believe in that phrase more and more as the season progressed. Sammi for instance was named the Big Ten Golfer of the Week in our spring season while Hailey came in 12th at Big Ten's. Success does not happen overnight and the lessons we learned this year we will apply next year and be a better team.
At our team banquet this past week Sammi took home the low scoring average award. This was very well-deserved as Sammi works very hard and also comes early and stays late at practice. She is an inspiration to all of us to work hard and become better. Maureen took home the Attitude Award that we as a team vote on. Again this award was well deserved. Maureen came to practice with a postive attitude every day. I think I speak for the whole team when I say that she helped all of us in our own special ways by being the special person she is.
Ok, I should study for this Spanish exam now. This year is one that I will never forget. We as a team had so many fond memories of each other that we will cherish forever. I feel so lucky to have spent my first year in college with such a wonderful group of people. We already have our goals and mission statement for next fall and are hard at work preparing for next season. We have learned alot and are ready to go out and win!
Go Illini, see you next year!
