May 9, 2014
STILLWATER, Okla. - Stephanie Miller and Ember Schuldt wrapped up the second day of play for the Fighting Illini at the NCAA Central Regional in Stillwater, Okla. Miller shot a 76 (+4) while Schuldt carded a 74 (+2) at the Karsten Creek golf course on Friday.
Schuldt improved by five strokes today in comparison to her first round score. As a result, the senior jumped 22 spots in the standings in a tie for 56th place. Thus, Schuldt's two-day tournament total is now 153 (+9). The rebound really showed on the back nine where Ember shot +5 on Thursday. The Sterling, Ill., native recorded a -1 on those nine holes today, including a birdie on 11 and an eagle on the par-5 18th.
"Ember definitely improved from yesterday and ended on a good note with the eagle on the 18th hole," said Illinois head coach Renee Slone. "There were still a few things she can improve on and a few pitch shots that didn't go her way."
Overall, Miller's 76 (+4) puts the freshman tied for 42nd place with eight other competitors. Following her 75 yesterday, she sits at 151 (+7), thirteen strokes behind the leader. Miller also carded a lower back nine today as well, shooting an even par.
The individual field is led by Kent State's Wad Phaewchimplee at -6. She is followed by UNLV's Dana Finkelstein at -2, than a four-way tie for third at -1.
In tomorrow's final round, both Miller and Schuldt will tee off at 8:25 a.m. but on different holes. Miller will get things going on hole number one while Schuldt begins on hole 10.
"We are going to go out there and leave everything on the course" added Slone. "We've seen it now three days in a row and know where we need to improve. There are some low scores but nothing that we can't compete with."
