Go behind the scenes of Illinois women's golf with "Chip Shots", the online golf journal. In the tenth edition of the season, sophomore Kaitlyn Wampler discusses the Indiana Invitational, how the golf course played, and the strong play of two sophomores.
Hi Illini fans! We just competed in the Indiana Invitational at The University of Indiana Golf Course and it proved to be a great learning experience for our team. Unlike most of the courses we play in Champaign the course at Indiana was very hilly. We were all thankful afterwards for the conditioning we do as a team, as it was very beneficial in keeping us strong and focused for both days of competition. The course was a good test with thick rough, tree lined fairways, and uneven lies. The tournament was run very well with a dinner in the Indiana football stadium as well as a great assortment of snacks to choose from on the course.
We started the tournament off with a tough first round, but bounced back with two solid rounds, which made us realize the importance of perseverance. This lesson will be essential for the remainder of our season and seasons to come. Sophomore Hailey Koschmann once again had a stellar tournament, finishing in first place after firing rounds of 71,74,69. She also holed out on hole 17 from the left rough for eagle!
Samantha Sloan also contributed greatly to the team's effort with solid rounds of 73,75,76. Although we did not get the team results we were looking for, we learned a lot and have many reasons to be excited and confident for our next event at The Ohio State. We will be working hard the rest of the week to prepare for a great tournament!
Thanks for following and be sure to keep following our progress on our mission to Otter Creek! Go Illini!
