Go behind the scenes of Illinois women's golf with "Chip Shots", the online golf journal. In the fourth edition, senior Meghan Naik talks about the team's spring break trip to Florida and their preparation for this weekend's Plantation Inn Invite.
Chip Shots // Spring Break `07
This week marks my last `flying trip' as an Illini golfer, and for me it is bittersweet because it is one of my last chances to spend time with my teammates in close quarters, but for our team, it is a great chance for us to improve on our games in warm weather. We began the week in Lakeland, Florida, where we were able to play various courses in the area. This gave us the opportunity to practice at courses with different types of grass, trees, greens, hills, and the like. Competition throughout the season requires the ability to adjust and be flexible because no one course is exactly like another. Aside from playing though, Spring Break is an equal balance of practice, competition, and having fun.
Rather than staying in hotels the entire week, eating out at restaurants every meal and becoming homesick, we were fortunate enough to stay with host families who became part of our extended Illini family and, not to mention, fed us like queens. Two of our rounds were set aside for qualifying to rank playing positions in the tournament that will take place on Friday and Saturday of this week. It was a challenging couple of days because again, we had never seen the courses, but it made the conditions equal for all players and forced us to stay patient and positive.
But, since this is Spring Break, there is still time for fun off the course. Earlier this week, our Coach surprised us with a trip to Universal Studios so we could take our minds off golf and enjoy the sights in Orlando. Since our assistant coach, Rick Slone, is like a kid himself, he was able to tour us around the park to ride almost every roller-coaster. Thanks Rick!
Today we are at Plantation Inn Golf Course, and we had our practice round for the tournament. Since we are the defending champions of this tournament, we are particularly excited to tee it up because we feel confident about this golf course. Though this year has been somewhat frustrating for some of us with injuries and sicknesses, we almost feel like this is our first chance to play with a solid lineup since most of us are back into the `swing of things.' The week of playing and practice is sure to help us as we transition into the thick of our season, and thankfully, there is much more competition to come.
Support us at the next one on April 6th and 7th and our very own Stonecreek Golf Course in Urbana!
Go Illini! Meghan
