MESA, Ariz. – The Illinois women's golf team will return to Arizona this Friday, March 8 for the Notre Dame Clover Cup, the Orange and Blue's second tournament of the spring season. The action is scheduled to transpire at the par 72 6,209-yard Longbow Golf Club in Mesa, Ariz., where the University of Notre Dame will play host to the tournament. The 16 competing teams will play 18 holes per day and golfers are scheduled to tee off at 8 a.m. on Friday and Saturday followed by Sunday's later tee time at 8:30 a.m.

The Clover Cup boasts a highly competitive field of play with six of the 16 participating teams enjoying a top-50 Golfweek/Sagarin ranking as of March 7, 2013. Among the ranked teams are powerhouse No. 3 Oklahoma, 13th-ranked Texas Tech, Notre Dame (26), Northwestern (28), SMU (34), and Mississippi (40). Joining the Illini and rounding out the rest of the 16-team pool are Cincinnati, Colorado, Florida International, Georgetown, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, and Tulsa.

Expected to compete for the Illini are tournament regulars Samantha Postillion, Pimploy Thirati, Jacqueline Calamaro, and Michelle Mayer. Due to her superior play and top-20 finish at the Westbrook Invitational, Illini senior Crystal Smith will make her 2012-13 tournament debut in the Illinois team's lineup. Smith and the team hope to carry over the momentum they established in their last round at the Westbrook Invitational where the Illini carded their lowest tournament round score of the 2012-13 season (295).

"Our practice round is going to be key as it sounds like the course is playing firm and fast," asserted head coach Renee Slone. "We are going to need to make smart choices off the tees and we also must make wise decisions regarding our level of aggressiveness on approach shots due to some holes featuring tucked hole locations."
