DESTIN, Fla.- The Orange and Blue women's golf team finished its first spring tournament in sixth in place after Monday's final round at the ten team Chrysler Challenge hosted by Florida State University at the Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort in Destin, Florida. The Illini scored 326 in round one, 320 during second-round play, and carded a team total of 316 during play today, giving the Illini a 54-hole total of 962.
Head Coach Renee Slone was pleased with the outcome of the Illini's first tournament, despite adverse conditions during play Saturday and Sunday.
"The first day we were teeing off in 25-30 mph winds," Slone said. "With challenging conditions, I was happy that each day the girls played just a little bit better than the last."
Junior Stephanie Mory remained the front-runner for the Orange and Blue during tournament action, shooting a 78 during both the first and second rounds. In the third round, Mory fired a UI tournament-low round of 76, giving her a 54-hole total of 232. Mory ended action tied for 10th place with Florida State's Kayla Shaul.
"Stephanie played very well this weekend, particularly today," Slone said. "She was one-under through 13 holes."
Junior Casey Burden ended action in 29th (81-80-79=161) and junior Seul Ki Park fired a 78 on Monday to give her a 54-hole total of 244, tying with Kentucky's Beth Felts for 35th. Slone was optimistic about the start of the season and now knows what the team will have to work on in the weeks to come.
"This was a really good tune-up," Slone said. "Now we know what we have to work on this week. Each day the scores got better, and now we know the direction we want to go in."
The Illini can be caught in action in two weeks at Rio Verde Collegiate Invitational beginning March 9th, 2007 hosted by Western Michigan University.
