Illini Hold 14th Place in Hawaii - 3/24/98
In opening round action Tuesday at the Dr. Thompson Rainbow Tournament at the Kaneohe Klipper Golf Course in Honolulu, Hawaii, Illinois shot a 346 and is in 14th place. San Jose State holds the lead after the first 18 holes, with a team score of 294.
Christin Sutton led the Illini in the first round with an 84. She is tied for 59th in the standings. Lorette Lyttle and Nell Macke both shot 87, and Jillian Sitter shot an 88. Christine Scott's 92 did not count in the team score.
It was the back nine that proved to be the nemesis for the Illini golfers. The four top golfers combined to shoot 10 strokes higher on the back nine. Sutton shot 41-43, Lyttle shot 41-46 on the par 72 course, and Jillian Sitter shot 42-46. Nell Macke dropped a stroke on the back nine, shooting 44-43, and Scott dropped two shots, turning in a 47 and 45.
