UI Opens with 12th Place Finish

The Fighting Illini women's golf team opened the 1998-99 season with a 12th place finish at the Mary Fossum Invitational hosted by Michigan State. The host Spartans won the tournament.

The Illini, playing without three of its five members of the 1997-98 lineup, posted scores of 344-341-348 for a total 1033. The top Illinois finisher was Christin Sutton (Sr., Midland, Texas/Robert E. Lee), who only saw action in one tournament last year. She shot rounds of 81-84-84 for a 249 total and was tied for 43rd place.

Senior Jillian Sitter (Sr., Naperville, Ill./Naperville North) was in 56th place with rounds of 89-77-88 for a 254 total. Nell Macke (Jr., Marshall, Ill./Marshall) shots 84-89-87 -- 260 and tied for 64th. Junior Lorette Lyttle (Jr., West Palm Beach, Fla./Benjamin) was the fourth place Illini golfer with rounds of 90-91-89 -- 270.

The Illini continue their fall season at the Lady Northern on Sept. 25-27 in West Lafayette, Ind., a tournament that serves as a prelude to the spring's Big Ten Championships, also hosted by Purdue.
