Illini Take Second at Hoosier Invitational
Oct. 20, 2013
GREENWOOD, Ind.- The 22nd ranked Illinois women's golf team finished the Hoosier Fall Invitational Sunday in second place (+32), unable to hang with tournament victor UC Davis, who went into Sunday's third round tied with Illinois for the lead. The Illini continued their strong fall campaign, and through four tournaments this season have not finished a tournament lower than third.
"We put ourselves in a great position heading into the final round, played a strong second round and went into the final round tied for the lead," stated Illinois head coach Renee Slone. "UC Davis just played a terrific final round of golf and we just weren't quite there as a team. On the final day if you put yourself in a strong position, if you want to win, you gotta have four solid scores and we just didn't have that today."
Individually for the Illini, senior Ember Schuldt continued her consistent play, scoring the lowest score for the Illini over the three rounds (+2) and earning third place overall. Coming off of her win last week at the Diane Thomason Invitational, freshman Stephanie Miller finished +5, including a team low round of -2, and finished 11th overall. Redshirt-junior Sam Postillion (+12) and freshman Emily Joers (+13) rounded out the Illini scores for the weekend.
The 2013 fall season is drawing to an end, with the Illini slated to compete in their last tournament of the fall next weekend in Kiawah Island, South Carolina at the Palmetto Intercollegiate.
"We have some work to do this upcoming week preparing for Kiawah Island," said Slone. "We certainly have been heading in a good direction this season, continuing to progress and build on things and put ourselves in the positions we want to be in. We have a good field at the final tournament so we'll need all hands on deck and we'll need five good scores just to finish the season on high note here and put us in a good position heading into the spring."
