Oct. 14, 2012
Florence, Ind. - For the third time in four tournaments redshirt sophomore Samantha Postillion was the top finisher for Illinois. The Burr Ridge, Ill., native tied for 20th at the Hoosier Fall Invitational, finishing at +15.
As a team, Illinois tied for eighth with Iowa at the 12-team tournament, finishing at +74. Not one team broke 300 on a windy day at the 6,119-yard, par-72 Belterra Resort Course. Wisconsin had the best round of the day with a 14-over par 302 to come back to edge host Indiana (+32) by two strokes and take home the team title. The Badgers entered the day with a 16-stroke deficit.
The Illini came into Sunday in fifth-place after a strong round of 304 during Saturday afternoon, but shot a 325.
"Yesterday afternoon was a step in the right direction," Illinois assistant coach Jackie Szymoniak said. "A lot of people finished their rounds strong. Unfortunately we just weren't able to get things moving in the right direction today."
Postillion had the best round of the day with a 79. Her round included an eagle on the 520-yard par-5 fourth.
"The wind really started howling at the point," Szymoniak said of Postillon's eagle. "She hit a perfect line drive at the flag from the fairway on a hole with a front pin location. During yesterday afternoon's round, she really found something in her swing, She gave herself a lot of good birdie opportunities."
Sophomore Pimploy Thirati shot a final-round eight-over par 80 to tie for 26th in the 77-player field at +17. Junior Ember Schuldt was one stroke back in a tie for 31st at +18 after a final round 85. Sophomore Jacqueline Calamaro finished 48th at +26 after a final round 81. Freshman Michelle Mayer finished 56th at +29 after also shooting 85.
Minnesota finished third at +40 followed by Missouri (+46) and Boston College (+58). Wisconsin's Lindsey Danielson was the individual medalist at -3 after rounds of 72-68-73. Minnesota's Carmen Laguna finished second at +1 followed Augusta State's Casey Kennedy (+3), Indiana's Kristen Schelling (+3) and Illinois State's Katie Jean (+5).
