Glenview, Ill. -
Illinois enters the final day of the Windy City Classic in 10th place in the 15-team event held at the Glen Club in Glenview, Ill. Sophomore Hailey Koschmann leads the Illini individually at +4 after rounds of 72-76.
Illinois had a solid first round of 295 (+7) and was sixth after 18 holes. Junior Raquel Hopton shot at a one-under par 71, which included three birdies and two bogeys. Koschmann's even par round of 72, meanwhile, featured 16 pars.
Nationally ranked Purdue leads the field at -12, some 18 strokes in front of second-place Arizona (+6). New Mexico (+7), Tulane (+8) and Northwestern (+12) round of the top five. Illinois is at +26, just five strokes out of eighth.
"We had a great start to the tournament," said Illinois head coach Renee Slone. "Posting a 295 and being tied for sixth was a big step for us. We're putting ourselves in position. Now we need to be able to string those together. The scores are pretty bunched, so there is certainly room to move up the rankings tomorrow."
Koschmann enters the final round tied for 23rd in the 81-player field at +4 overall. Hopton and sophomore teammate Samantha Sloan (73-76), are one stroke back at +5, in a six-way tie for 29th. Sophomore Kaitlyn Wampler is at +14 after rounds of 81-77 while sophomore Maureen Liddy is at +15 after rounds of 79-80. Freshman Crystal Smith, playing as an individual, is tied for 40th at +7 after rounds of 76 and 75.
"We need another solid round like we posted this morning," Slone said. "Conditions may be dramatically different with rain in the forecast so I'm interested to see how we handle it."
Teams will tee off on holes 1 and 10 starting at 7:30 am Tuesday morning.
