Illini Conclude Big Ten Championships

French Lick, Ind. -The Illinois women's golf team concluded the Big Ten Championships on Sunday with a final round score of 317 (+29). With a 317 in the third round, the Illini checked out of the event in 12th place with a final tournament total of 946 (+82). The Orange and Blue collectively carded one less stroke in the third round than they did in the second round, yet they were still overcome by Nebraska (935), whose team posted a 301 in the final round. The Big Ten Championships featured a full field of 12 teams and the tournament was played out over a three day stretch from April 26 through April 28 at the par-72, 6,121-yard Donald Ross Golf Course at French Lick, Ind.
As a team, the Illini stayed on a similar track through the third round of competition as they were on in the second round when the Orange and Blue posted a 318. Illinois teed off from the 10th hole again in the final round, but the Illini, as a whole, fared better on the front nine holes than they did on the back nine, where the team committed ten additional strokes. In the final standings the Illini turned up in 12th place, trailing 11th-place Nebraska by 11 strokes and 10th-place Michigan (932) by 14.
After the close of the tournament, 29th-ranked Northwestern (884) and the 15th-ranked Boilermakers of Purdue (884) were announced co-champions of the Big Ten Championships. Michigan State finished up in third place at the 889 stroke mark with an 11 stroke lead on the fourth-place Nittany Lions of Penn State (900). Fifth-place Indiana (916) rounds out the top five finishing teams with a single stroke margin over Wisconsin (917).
Illinois junior Ember Schuldt (232) wrapped up the third and final round at the Big Ten Championships with a round score of 75 - the lowest individual round score posted by an Illini in the tournament. With her round score of 75, Schuldt was able to advance from 36th place up to a three-way tie for 32nd in the pool of individuals. Teammates Samantha Postillion (237) andMichelle Mayer (237) closed out the event in a tie for 45thindividually with respective third round scores of 79 and 83.Jacqueline Calamaro (243) landed herself in a tie for 59thahead of fellow Illini Pimploy Thirati (246), who ended up sharing 64th place with three other golfers. Kaitlyn Wampler(256) makes up the rest of the Illini's tournament lineup as she holds sole possession of 69th place. For the Illini's round-by-round scoring breakdown, refer to the chart below.
Reigning victorious over the field of individuals is Boilermaker Paula Reto (212), who topped Michigan State's Caroline Powers (219) despite Powers' run from seventh place to second in the third round. Penn State's Katlyn Elliot weighed in with a third-place finish and tied Spartan Christine Meier at the 220 stroke mark. Michigan State's Allyssa Ferrell (221) and Northwestern's Kaitlin Park (222) round out the All-Championships team in fifth and sixth place, respectively.
