FRENCH LICK, Ind. - The Illinois women's golf team began its Big Ten Championships at the Pete Dye Course this morning, recording a team total of 316. The Illini's first round score of +28 tied No. 49 Wisconsin for ninth place.

"It was a challenging day for everyone," said Illinois head Coach Renee Slone. "The golf course played tough. The wind was blowing hard on top of the hill and opposite of what we practiced in yesterday making the holes significantly different. However, we will be a lot more confident in tomorrows round and believe and move forward."

Overall the Illini played a solid first round, collectively posting 5 birdies throughout the day. Starting on the back nine, the Illini fared better on the front nine holes where the team collectively posted four less bogeys. Following the first round of action the Orange and Blue are within 10 strokes of the majority of the field a.k.a. six teams.

Ember Schuldt leads the Illini after carding a 77 (+5) on the day. She had a pair of birdies and finished the first nine only two strokes over par. As a result, Schuldt is tied for 17th overall, just five strokes off the leader. In addition, the senior had the second best scoring on par-4's, tallying a +1 on those holes.

Samantha Postillion and Stephanie Miller followed Schuldt after they both posted a 79 (+7). Jacqueline Calamaro turned in the fourth best score with an 81 (+9). Rounding out the Fighting Illini scorecard were Emily Joers and Erin Ahern who shot scores of 82 (+10) and 90 (+18), respectively.

No. 27 Ohio State leads the 12-team field after recording a team total of 301 (+13). Nebraska is only one stroke behind the Buckeyes with a 302 (+14), followed by No. 25 Michigan State who carded a 305 (+17). Cassidy Stelzmiller of Nebraksa leads the individual race for the title after carding an even par. Two Buckeyes in the form of Jessica Porvasnik and Zoe-Beth Brake trail Stelzmiller by one stroke and two strokes, respectively.

The Orange and Blue will recommence action at the Big Ten Championships tomorrow morning when the team tees off at 8:00 a.m. CT.
