MELBOURNE, Fla. - The Illinois women's golf team finished day one of the Knights and Pirates Invitational in eighth out of 15 teams after carding a team total of 607 (+31) through 36 holes. The Illini posted a 298 (+10) in the first round and a 309 (+21) in the second round. Texas Tech (581) leads the field, followed by UCF (585) and Wisconsin (591). Individually, Texas Tech's Deborah Devilla (139) leads the field, with UCF's Carolin Pinegger (142) in second place.
"There are certainly some holes where you have to play close attention to club selection off the tee," head coach Renee Slone said. "The greens had a lot of contours to them, and you really have to break the greens into halves or thirds depending on how many tiers there are on each green. It is important to put yourself on the correct side of the hole."
Senior Samantha Sloan (151) leads the Illini and is tied for 25th overall after carding a first round 73 (+1) and shooting a 78 (+6) in the second. Seniors Hailey Koschmann (152) and Nora Lucas (152) are tied for 33rd place, with Koschmann posting a 73 (+1) in the first round and a 79 (+7) in the second, while Lucas shot a 76 (+4) in each round.
Sophomore Ember Schuldt (154) carded a first round 78 (+6) and a second round score of 76 (+4) to finish day one in a tie for 43rd place. Senior Katelin Dilger (158) is tied for 64th after posting a 76 (+4) in the first round and shooting an 82 (+10) in the second round. Freshman Michelle Mayer (167) is competing as an individual and carded an 84 (+12) in the first round and an 83 (+11) in the second.
"A stumbling block for us was really on the greens," Slone said. "Not a lot of commitment there, not a lot of trust in our strokes, and we just missed a lot of short putts. You have to trust yourself and have confidence in yourself and your abilities, which was one thing that was lacking a bit today. Tomorrow that's our number one goal, to go out there with complete trust and commitment on each and every shot and each and every putt."
The third and final round of the Knights and Pirates Invitational begins with a shotgun start at 7:30 a.m. CT. Live scoring can be found on golfstat.com while a recap of the final round can be found on fightingillini.com.
