Both Ember Schuldt and Illini Tie for 15th at Web.com Intercollegiate
April 8, 2014
Ponte Vedra, Fla. – The Fighting Illini women’s golf team wrapped up play in the third and final round of the Web.com Intercollegiate on Tuesday in Ponte Vedra, Fla at the Marsh Landing Country Club. The team recorded a final round score of 312 (+24), achieving a tie for 15th in the 19-team field with a 909 (+45) total.
Senior Ember Schuldt continued her strong tournament play with a third round 75, good for a 218 (+2) total and a tie for 15th place. The place in the individual field is her best finish this spring, as Schuldt's 218 was just three strokes above her all-time tournament best.
“Ember got off to a fantastic start yesterday. She had a new career low, five birdies, no bogeys, and no blemishes on the scorecard," said Illinois head coach Renee Slone. "However, today she just couldn’t make a putt. She had a lot of positives and gave herself opportunities but didn’t capitalize. Yet, that still doesn’t away from the fact that her first day was terrific."
Freshman Stephanie Miller was close behind after shooting a 76 in the final round to give her a grand total of 224 (+8), tying for 41st. Sam Postillion could not build on her even-par second round, as she shot an 81 today to finish at 232 (+16). Freshman Emily Joers ended her tournament as she started, shooting an 80 for a 236, +20. Lastly, junior Michelle Mayer finished with a total of 246 (+30).
“As a team we were far below our caliber of play,” continued Slone. “The golf course presented opportunities for us but we didn’t take advantage of them as we should have. We have some work to do in the next week before Ohio State and before Big Ten’s.”
No. 35 Florida State was able to maintain their lead from the first day and won the tournament with a total score of 851 (-13). East Carolina came in second with a total of 875 (+11) while No. 24 Big Ten foe Ohio State followed closely behind in third with an 877 (+13).
The Orange and Blue will return to competition on April 19-20 when they travel to Columbus, Ohio for the Lady Buckeye Spring Invite.
