Illini Look to Rebound on Final Day of Briars Creek
March 24, 2014
JOHNS ISLAND, S.C.. - The Illini's first two rounds at the Briars Creek Invitational may not have gone quite as planned, but tomorrow's final round offers plenty of opportunity for Illinois to race up the leader board to obtain a quality finish and even catch some Big Ten foes. The Orange and Blue sit in 15th place with a score of +50 producing rounds of 316 and 310 for total of 626.
"Wind picked up a lot today and we just had some mistakes that compounded and it was a little bit harder to recover in those conditions," said Illinois assistant coach Jenny Coluccio. "Tomorrow, we just need to stay patient through the changing conditions and play our own game, and not have other elements affect us. We are looking forward to a new day and a new round. Another chance for us to out out and be aggressive and leave it all out there on the golf course."
Emily Joers produced a nice rebound in the second round to be leading the Illini squad heading into the final day. After the freshman shot an 80 in the first round, Joers buckled down and shot a round two score of 75, tying her low round for the spring season. Thus, Joers is tied for 38th overall with a 155 (+11). In addition, the Wisconsin native tied for third for the most birdies on Monday with six.
Within three strokes of Joers, you'll find the three remaining Illini that round out the team score. Samantha Postillion and Stephanie Miller are tied with a 157 total (+13), good for 50th overall. Miller was the lone Illini to record both first and second round scores in the 70's (78 & 79).
Ember Schuldt shot a 158 (+14) to be tied for 55th heading into Tuesday. The senior also rebounded well in the second round, shooting a 76, four over par, after a first round 82.
Michelle Mayer saw her first official spring action today, recording rounds of 81 and 83 for a 164 total (+20). Mayer's first round score of 81 was the lowest the junior has shot in the 2013-14 season. Interesting to note, Mayer led the entire field in par-3 scoring, with a -2 on those holes today.
