ST. GEORGE, Utah - Paced by a final round 71 from runner-up Hailey Koschmann, the Illinois women's golf team carded its best score of the tournament during Tuesday's final round (305) to move up a spot and finish fourth with a 54-hole total of 921 (+57) at the BYU Entrada Classic. The Illini notched their seventh top-five finish of the 2011-12 season, while Koschmann earned her best finish of the season after turning in one of just four under-par rounds at the tournament.
"We had two solid scores today, but it takes four scores each and every round to get where we want to be," head coach Renee Slone said. "It's always great to move up during the final round, but we were hoping to make a much bigger charge up the leaderboard. We have some things to work on before the next tournament, so we will continue to try to build off this and steadily make progress. This golf course was great preparation for some of the future layouts we will be playing."
Koschmann, who notched the third second-place showing of her career, birdied her final three holes at the Entrada at Snow Canyon Country Club to get back into red numbers for the day and finish at 219 (+3). She tied for second with Texas State's Krista Puisite, as the duo finished three strokes behind individual medalist Kelsey Vines (216) of Oklahoma State.
"Hailey really finished her round strong," Slone said. "The real key to that finish was when she saved bogey on No. 17 after getting it up and down from about 55 yards following an unplayable lie. She remained focused and didn't let the situation affect her, which really enabled her to finish with those three birdies."
Sophomore Ember Schuldt also had her best round of the event on Tuesday, closing with a 75 to finish tied for 13th at 230 (+14). The Sterling, Ill., native picked up her fifth top-15 finish of the year.
"Ember was pretty consistent today with 16 pars," Slone said. "Even after finishing yesterday with a big number on the final hole, she was able to rebound today and put together a solid round."
Senior Nora Lucas tied for 24th at 235 (+19) following a final round 80, while senior Katelin Dilger turned in a third round 79 to finish tied for 30th at 237 (+21). Junior Crystal Smith had an 84 on Tuesday and tied for 49th at 249 (+33), and redshirt freshman Jacqueline Calamaro, who competed as an individual, was 51st at 250 (+34).
Texas State (892) won the tournament by eight strokes over No. 12 Oklahoma State (900). Nebraska took third overall in the 12-team field with a 54-hole score of 914.
The Illini will be off for a couple weeks before returning to action April 9-10 at the Knights and Pirates Invitational in Melbourne, Fla.
