Samford Women's Intercollegiate Day One Results

ONEONTA, Ala. - Fresh off its victory at the Gainesville Shootout III, the Illinois women's golf team carded a record-tying 291 in the second round of the Samford Women's Intercollegiate at the par-72 6,987-yard Limestone Springs Golf Course. The three-over 291 tied the lowest single round in school history, previously set at the 2002 Pat Bradley Championship. The Orange and Blue also recorded an opening round 307 and are in second place through 36-holes with a total of 598.

"We did a really good job of bouncing back today," Illinois coach Renee Slone said. "Scoring conditions continued to get better throughout the day and we took advantage of them."

Senior Kristine Cook fired an opening round 74 and a career-low three-under 69 in the second round, tying her for second place. She trails tournament-leader Tara Goedeken (70-71-141) of Tulsa by only two strokes. Cook's 69 ties the fourth-lowest single round in school history. Her previous low round was a 71 at the 2004 Lady Aztec Invitational.

Senior Seul Ki Park tallied an opening round 76 and a second round 73, highlighted by an eagle at the par-5 second. Park sits tied for 15th with a 36-hole total of 149. Freshman Raquel Hopton followed an opening round 80 with an even-par 72, tying her for 21st with a total of 152. Senior Stephanie Mory carded back-to-back 77s, tying her for 24th with a total of 154. Senior Kristin Kallergis (81-86) posted a two round total of 167, not counting toward the team total, but tying her for 69th. Junior Nancy Featherstone (86-83) competed as an individual and notched a 36-hole total of 169, tying her for 72nd.

The Tulsa Hurricanes lead the 15-team field by 17 strokes, while the rest of the top five is only separated by five strokes (Illinois 598, Murray State 599, Jacksonville State 602, Tennessee-Chattanooga 603).

The Illini's 16-stroke improvement on the day is the largest differential between two tournament rounds on the year.

"I want us to keep this momentum going," Slone said. "I just want us to post another good number tomorrow and take advantage of the scoring conditions again. We are definitely capable of going even lower."

The tournament will wrap up on Tuesday, March 18 with a final round beginning at 8:30 a.m. For continued coverage of the Illinois women's golf team at the Samford Women's Intercollegiate, visit fightingillini.com for a full recap following tomorrow's round.
