Mesa, Ariz. - The Fighting Illini women's golf team opened the Clover Cup Saturday March 9 due to untimely winter weather conditions in Mesa, Ariz., playing 36 holes instead of the previously scheduled 18 in order to account for the loss of yesterday's round. The Illini fared solidly enough in the first round carding a team total of 321, a score sufficient to place the Illini in 15th place in the pool of 16 teams. The Orange and Blue followed a very similar trend in the second round of play when the team tallied another team score of 321, moving them to 16th place after the close of the first day of tournament play with a total score of 642.

Leading the tournament since the first round has been third ranked Oklahoma (570), who shot a 281 and a 289 in the first and second rounds respectively. 34th ranked SMU (583) trails Oklahoma with 28th Northwestern (588), 13th ranked Texas Tech, and Florida International (595) rounding out the top five after the end of the first day's action.
