RIO VERDE, Ariz. - Gusty winds shook Friday's second-round Rio Verde Invitational leaderboard but could not completely uproot sophomore Stephanie Mory who finished +10 and tied for ninth place.
"I started off well today, really solid, then I kind of had some holes in the middle," Mory said. "I was able to get myself back on track, so I finished up well. The last two days I've played, I've had stretches where I've bogeyed four or five holes in a row. Tomorrow I just have to keep playing through the middle of my round and not make those bogeys in a row."
Entering Friday play, Mory and seven other golfers tied for fourth trailed a trio of leaders by one shot. At day two's end all three leaders fell at least five spots, and three players tied with Mory at the beginning of the day, tied for 16th.
There was some upward movement. Michigan's Amy Schmucker, playing in Mory's round-two group leads the field at two-over par after she subtracted two strokes from her opening total. Meanwhile, Northwestern's Jennifer Hong concluded the day where she started, this time alone in fourth place.
Iowa's Tyrette Metzendorf joined Mory for the second consecutive day, and the pair welcomed another golfer with a ten-over-par scorecard, Arkansas-Little Rock's Anita Ojeda. Mory and Metzendorf totaled identical 75s and 77s in their two rounds. In contrast, Ojeda shot par to improve by ten strokes in her second round (81-71.)
Collectively Northwestern bettered its opening-round total (302) by seven strokes to maintain the team lead.
