Islander Spring Classic Results Through 36 Holes

ROCKPORT, Texas - Illinois (627) kicked off the spring season in third place through 36 holes of the Islander Spring Classic, hosted by Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. The Orange and Blue posted rounds of 310 and 317 at the par-72 6,033-yard Rockport Country Club and trail the tournament-leader Lamar (617) by only 10 strokes.

Freshman Samantha Sloan (153) fired rounds of 76 and 77, respectively, to lead the Illini on day one, placing her in a tie for seventh with one round to play. Sloan is just four shots shy of the three co-leaders in the clubhouse, who tallied 36-hole scores of 149. The Lansing, Ill., native eyes the highest individual finish for an Illini this season, which is held by fellow freshman Hailey Koschmann, who has tied for 14th twice.

Senior Nancy Featherstone (157) notched rounds of 76 and 81 and is tied for 19th. Freshman Nora Lucas (159) turned in rounds of 80 and 79, tying her for 30th, while Koschmann shot back-to-back 80s and is tied for 41st. Freshman Abby Cotter (162) rounded out the scoring for the Illini with rounds of 78 and 84 on Monday and is tied for 47th.

Texas-San Antonio (618) sits one shot out of first place in the 15-team field. Sam Houston State (628) ranks fourth ahead of North Texas (629) and Drake (629), who are both tied for fifth.

Final round action begins Tuesday, Feb. 24, at 8:15 a.m. with a shotgun start. If Illinois can complete a comeback to earn the tournament victory, it would be the first time the program has started back-to-back spring seasons with victories in school history. The Illini also look to best their previous highest tournament finish of the season, which came at the Windy City Classic when they placed ninth.
