Illini Win Fourth-Straight Illinois Challenge over ISU

BOCA RATON, Fla. - The Illinois women's golf team started the 2012 spring season off with its fourth-consecutive victory in the Illinois Challenge, defeating Illinois State 6.5-5.5. The event was played at the 6,146-yard Royal Palm Yacht & Country Club in Boca Raton, Fla., and included four ball matches, as well as individual matches between the two teams.
The Illini earned 2.5 out of four possible points in the four ball matches. Senior Nora Lucas and freshman Michelle Mayer edged Carlee Cossell and Brianna Cooper (3 & 1), while redshirt freshman Jacqueline Calamaro and senior Samantha Sloan defeated Rachel Powers and Kaitlin Reid (4 & 3). Senior Hailey Koschmann and junior Crystal Smith halved the match verses Hannah Bachman and Jordyn Wyzgowski, while sophomore Ember Schuldt and senior Katelin Dilger fell to Katie Jean and Hayley Guyton (3 &1).
The Illini and Redbirds split the eight individual matches during the afternoon portion of the event. Koschmann (2 & 1), Lucas (4 & 2), Sloan (5 & 4) and freshman Pimploy Thirati (3 & 2) each notched victories for the Illini. With four points coming from the individual matches, Illinois won the Illinois Challenge by a margin of 6.5-5.5.
