Mike Basgier has been named Illini Basketball Strength & Conditioning Coach.

Champaign, Ill. - Mike Basgier has been named strength and conditioning coach for the Fighting Illini men's and women's basketball teams. Basgier (pronounced bass-GEAR) has more than a decade of experience in the profession and holds certifications with the National Strength and Conditioning Association, Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches Association and USA Weightlifting.
Basgier arrives at Illinois after spending the last three years as assistant director of strength and conditioning at Ohio University. While in Athens, he designed and implemented the speed, strength and conditioning programs for the men's basketball, women's basketball, volleyball and soccer teams. He worked alongside coach John Groce as Ohio won MAC tournament championships in 2010 and 2012, earning a pair of NCAA Tournament appearances including a trip to the Sweet 16 this past season. The Bobcat volleyball team also won two MAC titles.
Prior to Ohio, Basgier served four years as assistant strength and conditioning coach at Indiana University. He assisted with football and men's basketball and coordinated the design and implementation of strength and conditioning programs for baseball, men's and women's swimming, men's and women's diving, women's water polo and field hockey. His tenure included the direction of four Big Ten championship teams, multiple Olympic Trials finalists and the former world record holder in the women's 50-meter backstroke. Under his direction, IU's 2009 Big Ten baseball championship team had three players selected in the first round of the Major League Baseball amateur draft.
Basgier previously spent one year as a sports performance coach at Velocity Sports Performance in the Washington D.C. area, organizing the center's strength program and training area youth, amateur and professional athletes. He also served as a strength and conditioning coordinator with the Akron Aeros, the Cleveland Indians' Double-A affiliate.
Basgier was a graduate assistant at Auburn, overseeing the development of student-athletes in men's and women's track and field and cross country and men's golf. He also assisted eight other programs and coordinated curriculum design and training for AU's undergraduate internship students.
Basgier attended James Madison, where he was a member and competitor with USA Powerlifting, including a Top-10 finish at the 1999 Collegiate National Championships. He also served as an undergraduate intern, assisting with men's and women's basketball, men's and women's track and field, men's and women's soccer, wrestling, baseball, men's and women's swimming and diving and women's lacrosse.
A native of Virginia Beach, Va., Basgier earned a bachelor's degree in exercise leadership from James Madison University in 2001 and a master's degree in exercise physiology from Auburn University in 2003. He and his wife, Erin, will reside in Champaign.
