Illini to Host Virginia in ACC/Big Ten Challenge

June 4, 2014

The Big Ten and Atlantic Coast Conferences announced the matchups for the eighth-annual ACC/Big Ten Women's Basketball Challenge on Wednesday, and Illinois will host Virginia on Wednesday, Dec. 3. Time and television information will be released at a later date.

The meeting will be the teams' second in the challenge and fifth all-time. Virginia leads the all-time series 4-0 with wins in the 2008 Big Ten/ACC Challenge, the 2003 NCAA tournament first round, the 1986 Stanford Tournament and 1984 Women's Court Classic in Miami, Florida.

The Illini will attempt to rebound from a 9-21 campaign in 2013-14, including a 2-14 Big Ten record, but look to be improved with the addition of McDonald's All-American Chatrice White and WBCA honorable mention All-American Amarah Coleman. They will be joined by former All-Big 12 Freshman Team honoree Kyley Simmons, who sat out 2013-14 after transferring from Missouri.

Illinois is 3-4 all-time in the challenge after losing at Georgia Tech in 2013. But that mark includes consecutive victories: a 95-82 win over Wake Forest in 2012 and a 61-50 triumph at Clemson in 2011. The ACC holds a 48-32 all-time lead in the challenge and has won the challenge sixth of the last seven years, while the 2011 challenge ended in a 6-6 tie.
