Illini Visit Georgia Tech for Big Ten/ACC Challenge
May 16, 2013
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - The Big Ten and Atlantic Coast Conferences announced the matchups for the seventh-annual Big Ten/ACC Women's Basketball Challenge Thursday and Illinois will travel to Georgia Tech on Wednesday, Dec. 4. Time and television information will be released at a later date.
The meeting will be the teams' first in the challenge and only the second in the schools' histories. Georgia Tech scored a 70-60 victory in the 1995 Comfort Inn Downtown Classic in Atlanta, Ga.
The Illini went 19-14 in 2012-13, head coach Matt Bollant's first season, and advanced to the quarterfinals of the Women's NIT. Illinois tied for fifth in the Big Ten with a 9-7 record, equaling the team's best conference mark since 2000. The Yellow Jackets were 14-16 a year ago and 7-11, which was tied for seventh, in the ACC.
Illinois is 3-3 all-time in the challenge, which is tied for the third-best record among Big Ten teams. That mark includes consecutive victories: a 95-82 win over Wake Forest last season and a 61-50 triumph at Clemson in 2011. The ACC holds a 41-27 all-time lead in the challenge and has won the challenge five of the last six years, while the 2011 challenge ended in a 6-6 tie. However, the Big Ten holds a 19-18 advantage in head-to-head meetings between teams from the two conferences over the past two seasons.
The ACC and the Big Ten have long been among the most dominant conferences on the women's basketball scene. For the sixth time in conference history, the Big Ten had at least six teams selected to the NCAA Women's Basketball Championship in 2013, and Big Ten teams have appeared in the NCAA Sweet 16 in 27 of the last 29 years.
