Posting Up With Jenna - Season 2 Begins // April 22, 2009
All-American center Jenna Smith will once again be keeping Illini fans up-to-date on Illinois basketball during the offseason. In this year's first installment of "Posting Up," Smith talks about how postseason workouts are going and the student-athlete fashion show from yesterday.
Hey Illini fans! I'm exciting to be writing about my experiences here once again. This year I hope to give updates more often, so stay tuned...
Post Season Workouts
After our three-week break and getting some time to enjoy our spring break, it was time to head back onto the court. Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday we get up to lift and condition with our strength coach at 7:30 am. Our postseason workouts are a time for everyone to get their strength back and just be able to get stronger for the next season. Of course, with conditioning you aren't just trying to get stronger, you're trying keep your body in shape so that you can maintain your shape from the season. Tuesday and Thursday we do skill development and we are split up into groups; guards and post. Each session with the posts we are working on power moves and our outside shot to help us become more consistent and more confident in working on the perimeter. Then of course we have to work on our ball handling skills, which of course, is not a favorite for posts. Trying to stay low and do all the fancy moves is too much for us. We're old and our backs start to hurt hahaha! We will just leave it up to the guards! After those morning workouts, usually we will come back in the afternoon and play pick-up with all of our players coming back and our managers. It's always nice to just play against each other and have laughs and fun.
Over the weekend the softball team had its World's Largest Tailgate event and I was asked to be in the homerun derby along with a bunch of other athletes. It was so much fun! Emily Zurrer from soccer, Mike Tisdale, Dominique Keller and Richard Semrau from men's basketball, Brit Miller from football and Mike Poeta from wrestling were some of the others to hit. Even though I didn't win, I did hit a homerun and it was fun just to get out there and take some swings! Check out the photos HERE.
So last night our dear old Lacey was in a fashion show with other athletes to support Chris Norwell, a former football player who was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma in 2008. We went there to cheer on Lacey, support the cause and just have a good time. With Lacey's personality and everyone else that took part, it was a great show!
Well, that's all for now. I know it's short, but nothing else exciting is going on! I'll try my best to keep you guys updated!
Take care and hope the weather is great!
