Telfer Earns Conference Honors

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -- Illinois redshirt sophomore Sam Telfer has been named the Big Ten Conference Cross Country Athlete of the Week for his performance at the Illini Open last Friday. In the last meet of the regular season, the Escondido, Calif. native finished first for the Illini and second overall with an 8K time of 25:19. Telfer clocked a one-mile pace of 5:05.57 and finished five seconds ahead of the next fastest runner.
The last Illini runner to win the award was Mark Donohue in 2011 after he finished third overall at the Illini Open. This is the first time Telfer has received the award.
The Fighting Illini will compete at the Big Ten Championships this Sunday, Nov. 3 in West Lafayette, Ind.
