CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - The Illinois men's cross country team prepares to host the Illini Open this Friday, Oct. 23 at the UI Arboretum. The 8K race is scheduled to start at 4:45 p.m., immediately following the women's 5K race at 4 p.m.
The Orange and Blue will face both Illinois State University and Illinois Wesleyan this Friday. The meet will serve as extra preparation for the squad before the Big Ten Championships kick off the championship season in 10 days.
"The meet is for our guys who are trying to make the travel roster for the Big Ten Championships," cross country coach Wendel McRaven said. "It's another chance for the guys to see where they're at. It's a great opportunity since their legs are fresh, and we can really see how they've grown since the beginning of the year."
Nathan Bohne, Kyle Engnell, Jordan Hebert, Eric Johannigmeier, Phil Pompei and Jared Richardson will be racing for the Orange and Blue. They will compete for the three final spots on the travel roster for the opportunity to race at the Big Ten Championships on Nov. 1 at Penn State.
"There are three spots up for grabs on the travel roster," McRaven said. "We are looking for guys who can step up and contribute. I want to see them race well and see how their fitness has improved. Then from there, we can see if they're ready to race well at Big Tens."
