Illinois Intercollegiate Championships
Friday, Sept. 14 (5:45 p.m.) - 8K race
Weibring Golf Course // Normal, Ill.
The Fighting Illini men's cross country team will be back in action this Friday, Sept. 14 to compete at the Illinois Intercollegiate Championships in Normal, Ill., hosted by Illinois State University. The 8K race begins at 5:45 pm at the Weibring Golf Club.
The men's race will follow the women's 5K race, with the award's presentation scheduled for 6:30 pm. A full recap and results will be available at fightingillini.com following the meet.
The last time the Illini squad traveled to Illinois State was two years ago when they won the title. Illinois finished with a team total of 25 points with eight of the top 13 overall finishers coming from the Orange and Blue.
Coach Stewart on the Meet
"We're looking forward to going up to the Illinois Intercollegiate meet this weekend," Stewart said. "We've got several different objectives in mind we want to meet and walk away from the race healthy and continuing to move forward. The team continues to progress nicely. We've put two quality weeks of training together coming out of our home meet. Our work levels are still high, we've got some miles in our legs at the moment, but we're doing everything necessary right now to prepare us for the time of year we want to run our best."
Illini Set to Run
Six Illini are slated to compete this Friday, with each running for the second time this season. Redshirt-freshman Ian Barnett will join Joe McAsey and Paul Zeman as eached finished in the top- 10 at last week's Illini Challenge. Rounding out the travel roster is Dave Eckhart, Anthony Manfrin and Mark Donohue.
Last Time Out
Two weeks ago, the Fighting Illini opened the season with its eighth consecutive title at the Illini Challenge at the UI Arboretum. The Orange and Blue scored 26 points and was led by Tommy King who led the Illini with a 6K time of 18:41. Ian Barnett (18:46), Sam Telfer (18:51), Joe McAsey (18:55) and Paul Zeman (18:58) finished fourth, sixth, eighth and ninth, respectively. Five of the top 10 finishers were wearing Orange and Blue vests.
The Orange and Blue will take a week off before heading to South Bend, Ind., to compete in the Notre Dame Invitational on Sept. 28.
