CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -- Five Illini will compete in either the USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships or the USA Junior Track and Field Championships this weekend in Des Moines, Iowa. Both meets will take place at Drake Stadium from Thursday, June 20 through Sunday, June 23. Senior Graham Morris (1,500m) and freshman Cameron Viney (400m Hurdles) will run in the senior meet while freshmen Will Brewster (10,000m), Juan Paul Green (400m) and Mitch Mammoser (pole vault) are seeking titles in their respective events at the junior meet.

"This is a great opportunity to compete at a higher level," head coach Mike Turk said. "For the junior level guys, they are competing for national titles while the guys in the senior division will be exposed to world class competition. All of these guys will benefit from this experience moving forward."

The senior meet will serve as a qualifier for this year's IAAF World Championships. Top performers will be a part of the America team that will compete in Moscow, Russia on August 10-18. Viney kicks things off for the Illini on Thursday in the 400m hurdles after he ran a time of 50.54 at the NCAA West Prelims to qualify for the event while Morris, the indoor mile school record holder will run the 1,500m at 4:50 p.m. The finals of both events will be on Saturday with the 400m hurdles happening at 4:36 p.m. and 1,500m approximately an hour after at 5:40 p.m.

Three Illini freshmen including Brewster, Green and Mammoser will seek a USA Junior title this weekend in their respective events, with the top two finishers representing USA at the Pan American Junior Championships in Medellin, Columbia August 23-25. Mammoser will kick off action for the Orange and Blue on Thursday afternoon at 4:45 p.m. in the pole vault. His lifetime best mark of 16-7 1/4 (5.06m) set at the Big Ten Championships qualified him for the meet. After earning second team All-America honors in the 400m a few weeks ago at the NCAA Championships, Green will look to become a USA Junior champion in the event with his first round scheduled to start at 2:15 p.m. on Friday. Brewster will compete in the 10K under the lights on Friday night at 9:00 p.m.
