2013 NCAA West Preliminary Round of Championships

The Illinois men's track and field team will send 19 student-athletes qualified in 14 events to the NCAA West Preliminary Round of Championship at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin, Texas from May 23-25. The East NCAA Preliminary Rounds will be held at the same time at North Carolina A&T State University.
Each preliminary round site will host the top 48 declared athletes -- or 24 relay teams -- in each event, with the exception of the decathlon. The preliminary round will serve as the first two rounds of competition for the NCAA championships, narrowing the field in each event to 12 from each region.
The top 12 performers from each preliminary round site will then advance to compete at the 2013 NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Ore., from June 5-8.
The Illini are ranked in the top-25 in 12 different events, with the 4x100m relay squad of junior Julian Smith, sophomore Brandon Stryganek, junior Stephon Pamilton and sophomore DJ Zahn taking the highest spot with a No. 2 ranking while the 4x400m relay (Zahn, freshman Cameron Viney, freshman Juan Paul Green, Pamilton) rank fourth. Defending Big Ten champion's Vanier Joseph is listed as No. 6 in the 110m hurdles and Pamilton is seeded No. 7 in the 400m. Green also ranks in the 400m as he holds the No. 15 time. Senior Ryan Lynn boasts the No. 12 time in the 800m while the two-time Big Ten outdoor scorer Hunter Mickow also holds the No. 11 time in the 10,000m. Big Ten point scorer Brandon Noe is seeded No. 23 in the discus while two Illini rank No. 24 in their respective events with junior Matthew Bane in the pole vault and sophomore Davis Fraker in the hammer throw. Big Ten Outdoor Championships Recap
The Illini men's track and field team finished fourth with 86 points at the 2013 Big Ten Championships, behind two individual conference champions. Junior's Vanier Joseph (110m H) and Stephon Pamilton (400m) won Big Ten titles in their respective events while junior Cody Klein (pole vault) and the 4x400m relay notched runner-up performances.
Illini Athletes to Watch:
Vanier Joseph, 110m Hurdles (Jr., Redford, Mich.)
Joseph is coming off great performances at the Big Ten Outdoor Championships, winning his first 110m hurdles conference title. The junior holds the sixth fastest time in the west regional coming into this weekend in the event. He is currently ranked first in conference and 10th in the nation with his personal-best time of 13.59, which he ran to capture the Drake Relays title in April.

4x100m Relay Julian Smith, Brandon Stryganek, Stephon Pamilton, DJ Zahn)
The Illini 4x100m relay is the No. 2 seed heading into the meet after finishing second at the Big Ten Championships a few weekends ago. Earlier this year, the foursome won the Drake Relays title with a 39.33, fifth-fastest in school history and a season-best for the Orange and Blue. The Illini relay returns two of it four legs (Stryganek, Zahn) which advanced to the NCAA Championships for the second consecutive year and earned first-team All-America honors.

Stephon Pamilton, 400m, 4x100m Relay, 4x400m Relay (Jr., Bourbonnais, Ill.)
Pamilton is seeded seventh in the region in the 400m, following his standout performances at the Big Ten Championships. Pamilton was the first to cross the finish line in the 400m, winning his first Big Ten outdoor title. The senior will also run the third leg of the 4x100m relay, and anchor the 4x400m relay. The 4x100m relay finished second at the Big Ten meet while the 4x400m placed third. He also won the 400m title indoors.
400m - Personal-Best: 46.00 (4/20/13)
Hunter Mickow, 10,000m (Sr., Princeton, Ill.)
Mickow, who finished seventh in the 10,000m at the outdoor conference meet a few weekends ago comes into this weekend ranked No. 14 in the event. His personal best time of 29:20.45, set at the Mt. SAC Relays, was the eighth-fastest time in Illinois history. His time also became the first into the Illini top-10 list since his brother Colin Mickow achieved the feat in 2010.

Matt Bane, Pole Vault (Jr., Rochester, Ill.)
Bane, who scored points at the Big Ten Outdoor Championships for the second straight year, will enter the weekend as the No. 24 seed in the event. The senior's career-best vault came earlier this year at the Drake Relays as he finished second with a mark of 17-4 1/2 (5.29m) which ties the sixth best vault in school history. It's also the first time an Illini vaulter had cracked the school's top-10 outdoor list since 2009.
