Illini Travel to Drake and Penn Relays
April 25, 2012
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - The Fight Illini men's track and field team will compete in the prestigious Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa, from April 26-28 along with sending a group to the Penn Relays during the same dates. The Illini, who are in action for the final time before the Big Ten Championships, are entered in 14 events, including three relays, at Drake Stadium and three events in the Penn Relays.
"Our squad will split up once again this weekend," head coach Mike Turk said. "Some people will compete at the Drake Relays while our 4x100 will race at the Penn Relays. I'm looking for everyone to keep progressing. At Penn, our 4x100m relay team will face probably the toughest competition they'll face outside the national level this weekend. We wanted to get them into a meet where they will be tested and challenged."
On Thursday evening at the Drake Relays, senior Colin Mickow will kick off competition for the Illini in the 10,000m followed by senior Dan Kremske and junior Nathan Bohne in the 5,000m. Freshman Gary Ford will start Friday's competition in the 110m hurdles while sophomore's Matthew Bane and Cody Klein will look to improve their pole vault marks. Sophomore Ryan Lankford opens his outdoor season this weekend in the long jump and freshman Davis Fraker will compete in the shot put. The 4x800 final of junior Malcolm Taylor, sophomore Zebo Zebe, sophomore Ryan Lynn and freshman Joe McAsey will wrap up the day.
Freshman Brandon Noe starts the competition for the Illini on Saturday morning at 9:30 a.m. CT with the sprint medley group of sophomore Jade Ackerman, freshman D.J. Zahn, and sophomore's Ryan Lynn and Zebo Zebe will follow at 10:35 a.m. Senior Chris DeSilva will open up in the 3,000m steeplechase for the first time this season while a trio of field event competitors begin at 11:45 with freshman Branden Tanthavong in the triple jump and school record holder Davis Fraker and sophomore Brett Ramirez in the hammer throw beginning at 12:30 p.m. CT. Senior Nic Haab will look to improve his time in the 400m hurdles while the finals of the 110m hurdles starts at 3:16 p.m. CT will conclude the event for the Orange and Blue.
The 4x100m relay team of senior Andrew Riley, freshman Brandon Stryganek, junior Josh Zinzer and senior Stanley Azie are four Illini who are competing at Franklin Field for the 118th Penn Relays. Reigning Big Ten Track Athlete of the Week Riley will also run the 110m hurdles, an event in which the senior owns the nations top time, while Azie will step to the line and compete in the 100m dash.
