CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - On Saturday, April 23, the Illinois men's track and field team will compete in Iowa City at the 12th annual Musco Twilight Meet on the Francis X. Cretzmeyer Track, which is also the site of the 2011 Big Ten Outdoor Championships. Field events will begin at 2 p.m. followed by running events at 3:30 p.m. with the final sections set to start at 6 p.m. A full schedule of competition and heat sheets can be found above.
"This will be a very competitive meet and a chance for the guys to visualize what it will be like at Big Tens," interim head coach Mike Turk said. "It will be a bit of a dry run for the conference championship and give us a good preview of Big Ten competition. Our guys also tend to compete well at night under the lights, so they are looking forward to that."
The Illini will take on squads from host Iowa, Drake, Iowa State, Minnesota, North Central, Northern Iowa, Western Illinois and Wisconsin. A tape-delay broadcast of the meet will air on the Big Ten Network on Sunday, May 8 at 6 p.m. CT. Bernie Guenther and Craig Virgin will provide event coverage and analysis while Christina Meister will report from the field.
Junior Stanley Azie will lead the Illinois charge in the 100m dash, holding the fifth-best time in the Big Ten of 10.53, while senior Azeez Shogbuyi will return to action in the event. Both sprinters will run the 200m along with sophomore Josh Zinzer and junior Andrew Riley, who is also slated as the top seed in the his signature event (110m hurdles).
In the 400m, seniors Dan Jones and Shane Daniel will be joined by freshman Zebo Zebe, who will also race at 800m with sophomores Ryan Lynn and Malcolm Taylor. Juniors Kyle Engnell and Graham Farnsworth are the top two Illini in the 1,500m among the 10 Illinois entrants while a trio of Orange and Blue athletes will run the 5,000m, led by junior Hunter Mickow.
In the field events, Illini to watch for include freshmen Matthew Bane and Cody Klein in the pole vault, senior Matt McHugh in the hammer throw and sophomore Brett Einbecker in the shot put and discus. Freshman Justin Boone will long and triple jump while sophomore Ryan Michel will compete in the high jump.
