No. 24 Illini Split Up For a Pair of Meets This Weekend

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -- The No. 24 Illinois men's track and field team will split up this weekend with the majority of the team will traveling to Lexington, Ky. for the Kentucky Relays. The Kentucky Relays will be hosted by No. 25 Kentucky and feature Big Ten opponents Michigan, Indiana and Purdue. Illinois will also have competitors in California this weekend as a small distance group is set to compete at the Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, Calif.

Action in Lexington kicks off Saturday with Brendan McDonnell and Paul Zeman in the 5,000m, followed by Cam Viney, David Kendziera and Corey Hammon in the 110m hurdles. Zeman will then join Garrett Lee in the mile, followed by by five Illini in the 100m dash. Brandon Stryganek is coming off of a first-place finish in the event at the Illinois Twilight, where he clocked the fourth-fastest time in school history, and will be joined by teammates Vanier Joseph, DJ Zahn, Fuad Akinbiyi and Maurice Watkins. Defending Big Ten champion Stephon Pamilton and Kenneth Allen will run the 400m, followed by Kendziera and Viney in the 400m hurdles. Four Illini will compete in the 200m, including Zahn, Julian Smith, Akinbiyi and Watkins, while Zebo Zebe, Josh Jones and Malik Lee will represent the Illini in the 800m.

Field events will begin with Ben Dodds, Aaron Wilks and Geroge Wayda in the javelin, followed by Davis Fraker in the hammer throw. Fraker will then join teammates Brandon Noe in the shot put, while Ryan Michel and George Wayda compete in the high jump. The pole vault competition will feature four Illini, including Cody Klein, Blaze Galardy, Brandon Carrel an Corey Hammon, while Branden Tanthavong will represent the squad in the triple jump. Last weekend, Noe placed second in the discus with the third-best mark in school history, and will compete in the event again this weekend.

The distance crew of Jannis Toepfer, Graham Morris, Jordan Hebert, Liam Markham, Ian Barnett and Joe McAsey will represent the Illini in California this weekend.
